Where to retire in Thailand?
In terms of retirement, Thailand should be considered not as one destination but several – each with its own distinctive character and attractions.
Retirees should consider not only a selection of stunning coastal locations but also Bangkok, which earns its top ranking in tourism and lifestyle surveys through being an exceptionally live-able city.
In a recent roundup of Thailand’s retirement options, Forbes pointed out:
Warmly welcoming of retirees and ideal for seniors on modest budgets, Thailand has everything from bungalows on Phuket's blue lagoons to urban living in bustling Bangkok. Considered Asia's best buy for quality health care at reasonable costs. But the good private hospitals are in Bangkok, so make sure your retreat on the water is within three hours of the capital.
As well as the capital itself, Forbes’ three-hour rule would suggest locations such as Phuket, Pattaya and Hua Hin. But it should be added that international-standard healthcare can also be found in resort towns at hospitals such as Bangkok Hospital Phuket or Pattaya International Hospital.
